What to Know

Critics Consensus

Pure sidesteps the seedy pratfalls of its ribald premise to instead compassionately explore the complications of compulsion, shame, and struggling to make sense of oneself.

Pure: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Drew Gregory Autostraddle By pairing that visceral portrayal with thorough descriptions of OCD, the show becomes a teaching tool as well as a delightful dramedy. Sep 10, 2021 Full Review Pure: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Inkoo Kang The Hollywood Reporter Pure is a better illustration of OCD and its debilitating effects than it is a portrait of a young woman who has it, even with a fantastically versatile turn by Clive. Sep 2, 2020 Full Review Pure: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Steve Greene indieWire The show is best when it's anchored in Marnie's perspective, but "Pure" does manage to expand its scope, catching glimpses of the sexual hangups and frustrations faced by Marnie's potential romantic partners. Rated: B+ Sep 2, 2020 Full Review Pure: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Joyce Slaton Common Sense Media Charly Chive is radiantly mesmerizing as a young woman with an unusual mental illness in this high-quality British import about intrusive thoughts and the havoc they can cause. Rated: 4/5 Apr 6, 2021 Full Review Pure: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Jonathon Wilson Ready Steady Cut As sensitive and dark as it is hilarious, Pure is an essential comedy-drama about mental health, sex, and living with issues pertaining to both. Rated: 4/5 Aug 28, 2020 Full Review Pure: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Ashley Bardhan The Spool "Pure is proof that TV can be realistic, emotionally nuanced, and entertaining." Tony Z It was mildly off-putting the first few minutes, but the show stuck to its guns and was incredibly moving. I'd rather spend time with these friends than the cutouts in the eponymous sitcom. I felt so much for all of them, trying and trying to keep their lives moving. What else is there? Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/02/24 Full Review Audience Member Caught this by chance on HBO Max and it is breaking my heart the series wasn't renewed. I can't recall another show that has dealt with mental health issues so effectively. The characters are likable and empathetic, it's easy to care for them. This could have been an amazing opportunity to really educate others on neurodivergency. HBO - please bring the series back! Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Pure is a massive gift! I have Pure OCD. I can say this is an extremely realistic and dramatic representation of what it's like living with this condition. Simply brilliant!
