Tesla's Self-Driving Technology Under Fire: Is It Safe?
In a concerning development, Tesla's so-called 'Full Self-Driving' (FSD) technology has once again come under scrutiny by federal auto safety regulators. This latest investigation follows a series of incidents where Tesla vehicles have exhibited dangerous behavior, including running red lights and driving on the wrong side of the road, resulting in crashes and injuries.
But here's where it gets controversial: despite these incidents, Tesla maintains that its FSD system is not fully autonomous and requires human drivers to remain vigilant. However, many Tesla drivers have reported unexpected behavior from their vehicles, with no prior warnings. This raises questions about the reliability and safety of Tesla's driver-assistance features.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received 58 incident reports involving Tesla vehicles violating traffic laws while in FSD mode. These reports highlight the potential risks associated with Tesla's technology and the need for thorough investigation.
In a recent case, a Miami jury held Tesla partially responsible for a fatal crash in Florida involving its Autopilot technology. The jury awarded the victims over $240 million in damages, a decision Tesla plans to appeal. This case adds to the growing concerns surrounding Tesla's driver-assistance systems.
The new investigation covers a significant number of vehicles, essentially all Teslas equipped with FSD technology. Tesla offers two types of FSD software: Level 2 driver assistance, which requires full driver attention, and a version still in testing that aims to eliminate the need for driver intervention. The latter has been a long-promised feature by Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk.
And this is the part most people miss: Tesla is facing multiple investigations into its FSD feature, with reports of injuries and deaths linked to its use. Despite these concerns, Musk is under pressure to demonstrate that Tesla's driver-assistance features are not only glitch-free but also advanced enough to allow drivers to relax their vigilance.
In addition, NHTSA is investigating Tesla's 'summon' technology, which has reportedly caused accidents in parking lots. Another probe was launched into Tesla's driver-assistance features in 2.4 million vehicles after crashes in low-visibility conditions, including a fatal pedestrian collision.
Furthermore, NHTSA is looking into Tesla's apparent delay in reporting crashes to the agency, a requirement under its rules. These investigations could potentially lead to recalls, adding to the challenges Tesla faces.
Musk has made bold promises, including deploying hundreds of thousands of self-driving Tesla cars and robotaxis on roads by the end of next year. However, with these ongoing investigations and safety concerns, the pressure is on to deliver on these promises while ensuring the safety of drivers and the public.
